Shalhevet is unique among Jewish schools in Los Angeles. We offer meaningful
Judaic Studies classes and a challenging liberal arts curriculum in a Zionistic
setting. The principles of our community are based upon moral development and
moral reasoning as a means to being a good citizen. We look at the whole
student, understanding that each individual has different needs and committing
ourselves to foster each young man’s or woman’s religious, intellectual and
social growth.
At Shalhevet, the goal of our Judaic Studies program is to imbue each of our
students with a love of Talmud Torah, commitment to the ritual, moral and
ethical aspects of a life of Torah and Mitzvot. Our classes in Gemarah, Tanakh,
Halakha and Hashkafa are designed not merely to develop textual skills and
knowledge, but to focus on the spiritual and moral values inherent in Torah. Our
Torah studies teachers, role models of Torah values, create a warm
teacher-student relationship in which these values can flourish.
At Shalhevet, the General Studies program not only expands the students’
horizons and expects the pursuit of academic/intellectual excellence in the full
breadth of human knowledge but also emphasizes that the proper study of general
culture, the arts and sciences, can make us better people, better Jews.
At Shalhevet, our goal is to create tomorrow’s future leaders. In our warm and
caring community we teach students to think critically and ask questions. Our
faculty focuses closely on the development of critical reasoning skills as our
students hone their commitment to the ideals of democracy, liberty, equality and
justice.
At Shalhevet, we educate and learn from the total student. Student Activities
are an integral part of our school and of student life, not an appendage to the
academic program. Students are encouraged to participate and to take leadership
roles in a broad variety of activities and to initiate new programs and
projects. Available activities include the full range of athletics, music and
art, drama, newspaper and debate, political, social and communal activities,
and, of course, Tzedakah, Israel activism and Chessed.
At Shalhevet, we take seriously our responsibility to meet the needs of a broad
variety of learners and learning styles. We support students academically
socially and emotionally through our advisory program and close student teacher
relationships. Academic support is coordinated through the Director of Student
Learning.
At Shalhevet, we help our students appreciate and struggle with the difficulty
and complexity, but also with the beauty of Modern Orthodoxy. No question is out
of bounds. Limudei Kadesh faculty and the administration are sensitive to the
issues of adolescent religious development and to the issues with which
twenty-first century teenagers wrestle. Our students have ready access to the
Torah guidance staff and to all of their Rebbeim and Torah studies teachers.
At Shalhevet, the classes and corridors reverberate with Ruach. From singing
“Shabbos Kodesh” in the halls at Friday lunch to our Maccabia, and from
Shabbatonim to our daily Happy Minyan, the students feel the warmth and the joy
of their religious heritage
At Shalhevet, We believe that each student has something important to add to the
learning experience we therefore create a delicate balance between heterogeneous
grouping for subjects like Halakha, Art, and Social Studies and homogeneous
groupings for classes such as Mathematics Hebrew language and Talmud where
development and previous exposure are critical to a student’s performance.
We invite you to come and experience Shalhevet for yourself.
