Humanities

The Humanities departments at Shalhevet prepare our students to think outside the box and change the world. Our students apply the study of history, literature, and art to their daily lives. They compare American Revolution-era newspapers to modern CNN and Fox News coverage and travel to Gettysburg to experience our history. Macbeth and Prometheus's Funeral Oration are springboards for lessons on civic engagement. And our school-wide Stock Market simulation allows students to learn the principles of economics first-hand.

The foundation of these courses in English and History is centered on building strong writers. Writing is an integral part of almost every subject area, but especially in English and History, and increasingly important as a college preparatory tool. We are preparing our students to read, think, and write critically in whatever discipline they ultimately choose to study.

Our teachers focus on skill-building during in-class assignments, homework, and a wide array of traditional and creative assessments. Students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of each skill in class discussions, writing assignments, and group projects. The final area of critical focus within these departments is the development of vertical and horizontal integration, as well as interdisciplinary projects which highlight these skills.
